From early in the nineteenth century people had been attracted to Tynemouth for the sea-bathing. In the interests of modesty and easy access to the water, fleets of bathing-machines began to appear. A number of bathing machines can be seen in the foreground of this photograph. The Plaza can be seen in the background.
